Testing Requirements for North Carolina Licensure

FOR SECONDARY AND SCHOOL COUNSELING LICENSURE APPLICANTS:

Praxis Subject Assessment Tests will be required for all applicants for an initial teaching license as mandated by legislative action of July 1, 2014.

For answers to most of your Praxis Subject Assessment questions, please refer to the  ETS website.

FOR ELEMENTARY EDUCATION LICENSURE APPLICANTS:

Effective April 6, 2019, the North Carolina Board of Education passed an adjustment to policy LICN-003. Due to that, the candidates must pass the Pearson Foundations of Reading and either Pearson Test 203 or Praxis Test 7803 for Mathematics. These requirements are also shown below:

Math

  • Pearson Test 203 – Mathematics Subtest with a score of 227 or higher

                                                                     OR

  • Praxis Test 7803 (7813) – CKT Math Subtest with a score of 150 or higher

Reading

  • Pearson Test SA090 – Foundations of Reading with a score of 229 or higher.

For elementary education teacher candidates, this policy change means that two tests fulfill the mathematics subtest requirement and that the Pearson Test 103 – Multisubject Subtest is no longer a requirement for the elementary education license.

For more information, visit NC Foundations of Reading and General Curriculum and ETS Website. For other questions, please contact the Licensure Officer, Dr. Neelam Awan.

*PLEASE NOTE, THE WAKE FOREST DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION REQUIRES TEACHER CANDIDATES TO PASS ALL STATE LICENSURE EXAMS PRIOR TO THEIR RECOMMENDATION FOR LICENSURE.
