Testing Requirements for North Carolina Licensure

FOR SECONDARY AND SCHOOL COUNSELING LICENSURE APPLICANTS:

Praxis Subject Tests will be required for all applicants for an initial teaching license as mandated by legislative action of July 1, 2014.

FOR ELEMENTARY EDUCATION LICENSURE APPLICANTS:

Effective April 6, 2019, the North Carolina Board of Education passed an adjustment to policy LICN-003. Due to that, the candidates must pass the Pearson Foundations of Reading and either Pearson Test 203 or Praxis Test 7803 for Mathematics. These requirements are also shown below:

Math

  • Pearson Test 203 – Mathematics Subtest with a score of 227 or higher   

                                                                    OR

  • Praxis Test 7803 (7813) – CKT Math Subtest with a score of 150 or higher

Reading

  • Pearson Test SA190 – Foundations of Reading with a score of 233 or higher

Effective August 01, 2023, the FoR test (SA090) has been replaced by a redeveloped version of FoR test (SA190). 

A study guide and a full practice test for the updated Foundations of Reading Test (SA190) are available on the Pearson (SA190) registration page.
